I don't want to work with humans

18 June 2016

The guide was supposed to be back yesterday after dropping off the journalists as well as our GM in Maun, but he hasn’t arrived back yet. And just my luck that my airtime is done again! Prepaid phones are going to be the end of me. I’ve already practised the lecture I’m going to be giving him about using company cars on his free will without even letting me know or asking permission. Even if the GM gave him permission, I’d appreciate it if he would let me know as well since it’s the camps vehicle.

The good ol mechanic finally arrived yesterday to install the pump for the camps waterhole. But of course it can never be as easy as that – first the borehole was covered with a layer of mud – who would have guessed after it not being used for 2 years that mud be accumulate. When he finally broke through the mud, it appeared that there was no water. Goodness. I don’t think he actually knows what he’s doing. Marinus said he’ll come look when he comes next week. It’s a never ending cycle of nothing being completed out here. TIA right? Only recently learnt about This Is Africa. It’s not like we would use that back home, but everyone was so surprised when I had no idea what they were talking about. I actually first heard it from a tinder guy, yes I use tinder to talk to randoms. Actually met some nice enough guys in it, not that I’ve met any of them :D that’s just too intimidating and expectations just ruin everything. So I’ll just be their whatsapp/ facebook buddy.

There were more leopard tracks in camp today, I put up a camera trap a few days ago so fingers crossed we get a few close ups soon. It’s just a little frightening knowing that these beautiful cats are roaming around camp because I love sitting out watching the waterhole till after it’s dark so see what comes to drink, but I don’t want to be walking around at night alone, knowing they’re also taking a stroll somewhere. I never thought of it, until I noticed their tracks. Now I’m like whipping my head around with every noise I hear early morning while walking around.

Ok seriously, it’s part 10am and the guide isn’t back yet. It only takes a little more than an hour to get to camp from town so why hasn’t he left yet? Probably driving around town doing his chores. I need to lie down.

P.s. So he eventually phones me and asks if he can stay in town and that Shaun said it makes more sense for him to stay there if he has to pick up guests the next day (He forgets to mention that Shaun told him to check with me first before he stays in town, this was 12:30 and he only phoned at 15:30). So of course I get all mad since I have to buy food before the guest comes and how can they make decisions without asking me. Or at least informing me! Then he says he'll be at camp in 2 hours. I tell him it doesn't take that long to drive back to camp - only 1 hour 30 minutes. He laughs and says he's driving slow. Idiot. In any case, he only arrives 2 hours later after which I give him a piece of my mind as not only did he decide to stay in town by himself, he used the company vehicle for private use.  After a lot more stern talking I walk away to cool off.
