Distractions


Rant #500: Is it socially acceptable to tell the two-finger typer next to me in the library to stop hammering his keyboard like there’s no tomorrow? 
I just want to study in peace without the constant keyboard banging. How many damn emails does this dude have?! With so many one would have expected a more efficient way of typing to have developed 😉 
Concentrate on the classical music you’re listening to Jess! Urgg distractions are life’s evil, like updating a blog while aimlessly ranting about life. 
Okok, back to learning about community structures… (exam on the 25th)

No automatic alt text available.---> On a positive note - I managed to get in contact with animal foster heroes to offer watching or walking their doggos while they're out! Too much excitement! Just hope the dogs like me. Now I just need to find someone who has an adorable cat who needs love, although most don't need babysitting, unless it's a kitten. Ah I miss my cat at home, he's getting older by the day, Ma said she's having to feed him cooked butternut and rice because he's not eating other food anymore and the vet suggested soft cooked food. Poor babs, miss his cuddles. 

Also, going with flat mates to a Lebanese restaurant tonight - they have falafels!! My only true love

So that’s where I am at the moment, sitting in a dilapidated little chalet in Seronga, a small town situated in Northern Botswana, on the side of the delta which tourists seldom visit. Painted a pretty picture right, ag it’s not bad, it’s extremely rural – picture majestic elephants roaming freely between the villagers at dusk and dawn; fetching water either from a manually operated borehole or a tap; getting to the closest town (110km) away by crossing the delta with a ferry and having local kiddies shout “kua” which means white person every single time you pass them. So as you can imagine, it’s a little different to what I am used too, but it’s Africa and I love it.  Although I do miss having a fridge and everything that comes with that. I’ve already warned the family back home that I’m expecting the biggest braai known to man when I return as I need to catch-up on all the meat I’m missing out on while living the dream in Botswana (only slightly sarcastic on that note). Breaking point

     Drama drama drama. Of course, I mean we’re in Botswana right?! With Mankwe burning down – things had to be shifted around a lot, and of course that included my group. We were first based at Mankwe – slightly awkward for me since I didn’t know the area, and it added so much driving time to our already long transects. We were originally only to stay for about a week until the new tents arrived from South Africa which were to act as temporary dining and lounge areas at Mankwe. The week flew by (because 20km long transects are just so much fun) and we were finally able to move back “home”. Here naïve me thinks we are back at Tuskers for good, only to come back from the island to hear that our bags were packed by the staff and moved back to Mankwe because guests arrived that night at Tuskers. Just another day

This morning was pretty sad, we had to say goodbye to our one student, Steffi, who has become such a gem after being super quiet in the beginning. But then again I was also pretty quiet - Robyn keeps teasing us about that and about the fact that she tried insulting us to get us to open up. How she thought that was going to work, only she would know. I remember getting pretty miffed when she got a little too personal for my liking. But that's in the past, we get on really well now, even if she sometimes calls me a "cheeky shit", but I can't argue about that, I do sometimes push the buttons. Definitely going to miss Steffi though, I even taught her how to cook bobotie - she's not much of a cooker as she orders most meals in back home (Germany), but she said she's definitely going to make bobotie for her friends:) And whenever I cooked food, which was most of the time but I'm not complaining because I love making food, she'd always come help.  Things ...
